A Wonderful Way to Do a Book Event
Thirteen Villagers gathered in the Village conference room in early September, not quite sure what to expect. The event posting sounded promising: An interactive discussion… food for thought… just come and enjoy the event.
It delivered all that – and more. Villager Bill Wishner brought his latest book, “Prompts for a Living Workbook,” and led the group on a spirited discussion through the series of his writing prompts in his workbook. He wrote the book as part of his own journey of self-reflection, with no intention of sharing it broadly. Perhaps, he thought, something his kids or grandkids might find interesting someday. He then discovered the book spoke to others, too. So, on this day he opened the book for this group of seniors, inviting them to think about his prompts, and maybe share a story.
“These prompts are a way to re-examine our life experiences… some related to love… all universal experiences that bind us together. It will draw us all in one way or the other. There are no right reactions or responses. Let’s just see where it goes,” he said.
Each prompt opened with a thought. One prompt asked about a time when you leapt into the unknown with someone …. and were better off for it. Other prompts asked about a time in your life when something changed dramatically… a memorable moment you wish you could preserve… a harsh reality you had to face… a time when you captured love… a blinding moment of clarity.
Bill shared many of his answers and as the book made its way around the room, each person read a prompt, then passed it on. By the end just about everyone had shared a personal experience. They spoke about cancer and divorces, seeing their houses on fire, a pen pal, getting 500 hugs, and one Aha! moment at an EST retreat (remember EST?).
The response was universally positive. Everyone thanked Bill for a most touching event and a wonderful way to do a book program, as well as giving the group an opportunity to learn about each other and build community.
