President’s Message: Volunteering to Build Community
By Richard MyersPosted: 03/26/2026
April opens the door to spring. Earth Day reminds us of stewardship - of our environment and our community. As gardens bloom and calendars fill, we pause to appreciate the volunteers, neighbors, and shared responsibility that make Pasadena Village more than an organization. They make it a living, growing community.
April is also Volunteer Month, a time to recognize the many ways our members contribute to the life of the Village. Later this month, we will gather for our annual appreciation event - a chance to celebrate the generosity, commitment, and spirit that sustain us.
When we hear the word volunteering, we often think of driving a member to an appointment or delivering a meal. Those acts are essential and deeply appreciated. But volunteering at Pasadena Village is much broader - and more powerful - than any single task.
Volunteering is showing up.
It is attending a gathering, joining a discussion, serving on a committee, or reaching out to welcome someone new. It is offering an idea, sharing your story, lending your time, or simply being present. Every act of participation strengthens the web of connection that builds our community.
Even receiving services is part of this circle of care. When you allow someone to help you, you give them the gift of purpose. You create an opportunity for generosity. You affirm that we belong to one another. In that sense, accepting support is also a form of contribution. It completes the circle.
As Pasadena Village continues to grow, we are becoming a more successful and respected institution within the Pasadena community. With that success comes both opportunity and responsibility. Over the next few years, we anticipate continued growth - and we must be thoughtful about how we manage it. The Board is increasingly focused on the future: how we expand while preserving the character, values, and sense of connection that define us. Growth should never come at the expense of who we are; rather, it should strengthen the community we have worked so carefully to build.
One of our central goals is to reduce isolation and to model what aging well can look like - engaged, connected, purposeful, and supported. That mission depends on participation in all its forms.
We want members to join us to reduce their isolation. Some may not take on specific roles or responsibilities - and that is perfectly fine. If you attend events, participate in activities, share conversation, and allow yourself to be part of this community, you are contributing to building a community. Your presence matters.
In fact, if you join Pasadena Village and immediately feel less isolated - if you feel welcomed, seen, or connected - you are helping us meet our goal. Your experience is the mission in action. Simply by engaging and allowing yourself to belong, you are advancing our purpose and strengthening the Village for everyone.
Earth Day teaches us that stewardship is an ongoing commitment. The same is true here. Caring for what sustains us today - our relationships, our programs, and our culture of kindness - ensures that Pasadena Village remains vibrant, resilient, and welcoming for years to come.
This spring, I invite each of us to reflect: How am I helping to build community? Where can I step forward, reach out, or simply show up?
Volunteering is not just something we sign up to do. It is how we choose to belong - and together, we are building a model of connection and aging well for Pasadena and beyond.
Warmly,
Dick Myers
