1619 Lingering Imprint: Two Special Presentations in November and December
We have good news! The 1619 Lingering Imprint series has two wonderful presentations coming up in November and December.
Our October presentation on the Harlem Renaissance had to be canceled at the last minute when Dr. Mario Ortiz became ill. Happily, we have been able to reschedule it for December 18.
November 20 at 12 noon – The Center for Restorative Justice
John Williams, Executive Director of Pasadena's Center for Restorative Justice, will introduce us to the history and programs of this local nonprofit. The organization conducts educational pilgrimages to sites central to the Civil Rights Movement in the South, as well as exploring Pasadena's own racial history.
December 18 at 12 noon – The Harlem Renaissance and Cuba's Negrismo Movement
Dr. Mario A. Ortiz returns for a fascinating exploration of two important cultural movements of the early 20th century: America's Harlem Renaissance, also known as the New Negro Movement, and Cuba's Negrismo movement.
The presentation will explore the extraordinary cultural contributions of both movements through music, poetry, theater, and visual arts.
Dr. Ortiz brings an impressive background in Hispanic literature, musicology, and music history. He holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature from Indiana University and has pursued extensive studies in music and sociology.
Both presentations are free and open to the public!
We encourage Villagers to invite friends and others who may be interested in these engaging explorations of history and culture.
