Joining a new organization can feel exciting but also a little overwhelming. New faces, unfamiliar programs, and a busy calendar can leave even the most outgoing person wondering where to begin. That’s where the Pasadena Village Engagement Team steps in. Formerly known as the Membership Team, the Village Engagement Team (VET) focuses on one important goal: making sure every new Villager feels welcomed, connected, and part of the vibrant life of Pasadena Village. “We want every new member to get involved with the Village,” says Vice Chair Phil Hoge. From the moment someone joins, VET works to create opportunities for connection and participation during those important first months.

One of the first voices many new members hear belongs to Lora Harrington-Pride. She makes welcome phone calls to new Villagers, offering warmth and encouragement from the start. “I want that first voice from the Village to be one of good cheer,” she says. “I love talking to new Villagers. I want them to feel that they are joining a community.”

That sense of belonging is strengthened through a variety of events designed especially for newcomers. Monthly Meet Me at the Village gatherings invite prospective and new members into the Village office for refreshments and conversation, offering a relaxed way to learn about Village life and meet others.

For many, one of the highlights is the Welcome Lemonade, graciously hosted by Nancy Goodell at her Pasadena home. The informal gathering gives new Villagers an opportunity to make new friends in a comfortable setting.

New members are encouraged to attend New Member Orientation, hosted by VET co-organizer Jeff Gudstadt. “We try to give the new member a sense of all they can take advantage of by being a member.” Another helpful program, Plan Your Month, offered by Villager & Volunteer Coordinator Nathan Wolford, walks members through the Village Calendar and shows them how to sign up for events and activities.

Pasadena Village now includes approximately 275 members, all connected through opportunities for social engagement, educational programs, practical support, and shared community resources. The Village encourages prospective members to join with a desire and capacity to participate - because Pasadena Village is about vitality, engagement, and building meaningful relationships.

The newest initiative, New Member Mentors, pairs incoming members with experienced Villagers for extra support. Coordinators Gary and Ann Smith understand how important a friendly guide can be. “Most people seem to be a little shy when they join a new organization like Pasadena Village,” says Gary. “Having a mentor to help navigate new experiences and answer concerns can make all the difference.”
