President's Message

As we look around at the growth and vitality of the Village, it’s impossible not to feel a sense of awe—at how far we've come, how much we’ve grown, and how deeply we've connected. But this isn’t just about numbers or size. It’s about meaning, purpose, and belonging.

In this moment of expansion, it’s natural to ask: What holds us together? For many of us, it’s the same force that binds together families, neighborhoods, even nations—a shared identity. Whether cheering together for the Olympics or rooting for our favorite hometown teams, we feel part of something larger than ourselves. That same spirit is alive here in the Village: we are not just a community—we are a community of communities, each with its own rhythm and personality, yet all part of one vibrant, evolving whole.

The Village offers something that becomes more precious as time passes—new friendships. For those of us who’ve had to say goodbye to old friends, the chance to meet new ones is not only comforting, it’s life-giving. Whether we’re gathering for coffee, joining a committee, or helping out with an event, every small encounter opens the door to something larger: connection, meaning, and mutual care.

It reminds me of the story of three bricklayers. When asked what they were doing, one said, “I’m laying bricks.” Another said, “I’m building a wall.” But the third looked up with pride and said, “I’m building a cathedral.” That sense of pride, of ownership, of being part of something enduring and beautiful—that’s what I see among us. We’re not just filling in—we’re building something remarkable.

And here’s something else: we are part of a national movement—even if we didn’t set out to be. Across the country, health leaders, researchers, and communities are waking up to the profound impact of loneliness and isolation, especially as we age. Without knowing it, by joining the Village, we have become part of the solution. We’re proving that meaningful connection, shared purpose, and mutual support are not luxuries—they’re necessities. We are not just an entertaining neighborhood group. We are contributing to something far bigger than ourselves.

There’s a powerful difference between social interaction for amusement and purposeful collaboration. One is hedonic—focused on pleasure and momentary enjoyment. The other is eudaimonic—rooted in meaning, personal growth, and lasting purpose. At the Village, we strive to offer both—but we know that the deepest, most loyal bonds come not from casual socializing, but from shared effort, shared risk, and shared purpose. That’s where the magic lies.

There’s a unique kind of trust that comes from struggling together, working together, and sometimes even worrying together. Whether organizing a new initiative, welcoming newcomers, or navigating challenges, each shared experience strengthens our foundation.

Yes, change is inevitable. We grow, we shift, and we adapt. But through it all, we must ask: what do we want to carry with us? What do we want to preserve? The challenge is not to resist change, but to shape it—to hold fast to our core values even as we make space for new energy, new faces, and new possibilities.

Let us keep building—not just a bigger Village, but a deeper one. One grounded in shared effort, authentic friendships, and the joy of knowing we are part of something enduring—and essential.
