Genealogy Group: Discovering Our Pasts

I started doing genealogy during the Pandemic and, as they say, fell through a lot of fascinating rabbit holes.  I was hooked.  It occurred to me that there were probably others in the Village who knew a lot more about genealogy than I did and maybe some people who would like to find out about their families. We have had a several people cycle in and out of the group, some come when they have the free time. I have enjoyed getting to know new people and listening to their advice on researching my family.  Leading this small group has kept me engaged, even when I get discouraged.  It has been fun for me and Zoom has proven to be an excellent way to connect.

On Thursday, November 14, five members of our Village Genealogy Group took a field trip to the Family History Center on Madre Street.  Marcy and the other volunteers there were very helpful and our two hours flew by.  The Family History Center has marvelous resources that one cannot access online.  Almost everyone was able to solve a problem or two or just discover new resources.

Villager Sandra Moffett, a long-time member of the Genealogy Group attended the field trip.  She said, “I enjoyed the outing and meeting everyone in person.  I have been a part of the Genealogy Group for several years.  I was glad to get the information from Family History Center, and I learned a lot of things that will help me find information about my family so much easier than trying to navigate alone.  The volunteer who helped me was very knowledgeable and showed me things that will help me to find information faster and make the process of researching a pleasure and not a chore.”
