Message from the President

Dear Villagers and Community Friends,

I want to share a message that embodies the spirit of perseverance, resilience and the boundless potential that lies within each of us, regardless of age.

As we age, it's natural to experience a decline in physical capacity. However, what we might lose in physical prowess, we can make up for with experience, determination and an array of other strengths. Our journey through life equips us with invaluable lessons and insights that younger generations have yet to acquire. This blend of wisdom and tenacity can lead to extraordinary achievements, no matter how many candles adorn our birthday cakes.

On July 21, the CBS Morning Show featured a remarkable story about Florence Meiler, who is currently over 90 years old and is a testament to the incredible feats possible at an advanced age. Florence, who began her current training regimen at 65, is now preparing for the 2028 Olympics, aiming to compete in the female decathlon. Although this event does not currently exist, she is hoping it will by then, and Florence plans to participate in it. Her journey, filled with numerous awards and accolades, is a shining example of what can be achieved when one combines willpower, determination, and a positive attitude.

I am personally astonished to hear about a 90-year-old woman who is working so hard in pursuit of a goal in an event that currently does not exist. Talk about the power of hope!

Florence’s story is more than just an inspiring tale of athletic determination; it illustrates the magnitude of what can be done at any age when we refuse to let societal expectations limit our potential. Her journey encourages us to redefine what it means to be over 55. It reminds us that our age should not confine us but rather, it should be a testament to the wealth of experience and strength we possess.

As we continue our efforts to reshape the narrative around aging in our Village, let us draw inspiration from Florence Meiler. Let her dedication and achievements remind us that it is never too late to set new goals, pursue new dreams and push the boundaries of what we are capable of.

Together, let’s embrace our years with pride and continue to strive for greatness. The path ahead is paved with opportunities for those who dare to dream and have the courage to act. As George Eliot said, “It is never too late to be what you might have been.”

With determination and optimism,

Laissez le bon temps rouler

Dick Myers
