Washington Park: Pasadena’s Rediscovered Gem

Washington Park in Pasadena is a picturesque urban oasis nestled amid the city's hustle and bustle. Spread across 5 acres, this verdant sanctuary offers a serene retreat for locals and visitors alike. The park's lush greenery and towering trees create a soothing ambiance. 

One of the park's highlights is its newly completed Washington Park Community House, where Pasadena Village will host events every Thursday afternoon this fall. 

Washington Park also features recreational amenities such as a newly installed adult fitness area and children’s playground, both situated against a scenic backdrop for outdoor exercise. 

Throughout the year, the park hosts a variety of community events and gatherings. On June 12 at 5 p.m. Pasadena Village will host a free, live jazz outdoor concert at the park. The parking lot is at 700 E. Washington Blvd. and is the first driveway east of El Molino Ave. going eastbound.

Whether you are seeking solitude amid nature or joining in lively community festivities, Washington Park offers something for everyone, making it a beloved gem in the heart of Pasadena. Three Pasadena Village walking groups — the Urban Walkers, Late Risers and Evening Strollers — have circled through the park in May, adding this refurbished and rediscovered local asset to their roster of favorite destinations.

Octavia’s Bookshelf Has a Story

Pasadena Village will host a meet-and-greet event at Octavia’s Bookshelf, 1365 N. Hill Ave., on June 11 at 1 p.m., at which African American bookstore owner Nikki High will tell us about the store’s namesake and what led her to start the business. 

Pasadena’s own Octavia Butler was a groundbreaking science fiction writer known for her innovative narratives that explore themes of race, gender, power and identity. 

Born in 1947, Butler overcame many obstacles as an African American woman to become one of the most influential authors in the genre. Her works, including Kindred, Parable of the Sower and the "Patternist" series, earned her numerous awards, including the Hugo and Nebula Awards. 

All of Octavia Butler’s books will be available for purchase at the bookstore, plus an impressive selection of prominent African American authors. Then, attendees who may want to transfer our literary enthusiasm to enjoying refreshments can reconvene at Millie's.
