On August 18, 2021, Pasadena Village and Village Movement California co-hosted an excellent presentation on LGBT Inclusive Villages by Sherrill Wayland of the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging and SAGE: Advocacy & Services for LGBT Elders.  With clarity, frankness and a deep commitment to the LGBTQ community, Sherrill enlightened us on many issues.  Beginning with an explanation of gender identity, sexual orientation and the importance of using proper pronouns, she pointed out the common pitfalls of making assumptions about people.  

Our world has not always been so open, yet we still have much more work to do… as individuals and as a Village.  There are many challenges to growing older.  For LGBT seniors these challenges are exacerbated by decades of marginalization and discrimination.  This often translates into greater isolation, as well as limited family support.  Housing and other forms of discrimination still exist.

By connecting with our LGBTQ peers we offer solutions for isolation, opportunities to broaden our understanding and we discover common ground to build lasting bonds.   The results are mutually enriching.

Our village is making important progress in building relationships with the LGBTQ community both one-on-one and with organizations including the San Gabriel Valley LGBTQ Center, PFLAG Pasadena, and the organizers of the GayOut Parade, and we look forward to fostering mutually beneficial relationships with other organizations and faith communities that serve those who identify as LGBTQ.  

During the presentation, Pasadena Village members expressed how welcoming fellow village members were to them when they joined. Pasadena Village members are developing cultural competency with the guidance of the Inclusivity Committee and the openness and welcoming attitude of our members.
