How Pasadena Village Helped Me Rebuild After the Eaton Fire

In this new year, I wanted to thank the Pasadena Village under Katie's leadership for supporting me through these difficult times from fire destruction to home reconstruction.

From the beginning, the Village has offered me unbelievable support. While most people needed computers and electronics, I needed saws and hand/power tools to build a shed on my property. In late May, I completed the shed to store and protect the few items that I owned.

At the Tamale Luncheon, I briefly discussed how important the "Wishlist" tools were to me. I explained that the only plant to survive the Eaton Fire was my sacred Sago Palm given to me by Auntie Kim perhaps, 40 years ago. However, to start my rebuild, my contractor wanted to bull doze it out. I refused and stopped the rebuild project until I could find a professional to safely remove my Sago Palm.  My research along with advice from The Huntington gave me hope. Then there was a huge problem. The person that I employed to remove the Sago Palm couldn't find a plant box exceeding 40" square at the top. I visited and called nurseries all around Southern California without success. If I was to preserve the Sago Palm and rebuild my home, this plant had to be moved temporarily. Then, I thought, I would build a plant box myself. After 1 1/2 weeks and with the tools supplied by the Village, I was successful.  The Sago Palm was moved safely last Saturday and it has a home at my neighbor's for the next six months.

Of course, this isn’t the only time these tools have supported me, but it’s the most recent example that highlights how the Village’s help has truly improved my life.
