This is a trip by Metrorail to the Geffen Contemporary to view the MONUMENTS exhibit, which closes on May 3. After the exhibit, we’ll walk a few blocks to Wurstkuche for lunch.
MONUMENTS marks the recent wave of monument removals as a historic moment. The exhibition reflects on the histories and legacies of post-Civil War America as they continue to resonate today, bringing together a selection of decommissioned monuments, many of which are Confederate, with contemporary artworks borrowed and newly created for the occasion. Removed from their original outdoor public context, the monuments in the exhibition will be shown in their varying states of transformation, from unmarred to heavily vandalized.
Christopher Knight, in a Los Angeles Times review, called this “…the most significant show in an American art museum right now. The exhibition pairs cautionary art history with thoughtful and poetic retorts from 20 artists…” You can read the review here: 'Monuments' is the most significant American art museum show right now - Los Angeles Times
I will distribute Metrorail departure times the week before the trip so that you can depart from the station that is most convenient for you. We always travel and meet up in the first car of the train. The Geffen Contemporary is across the street from the Little Tokyo Metrorail station and a 10-minute walk from Wurstkuche.
Wurstkuche’s website says they are a Purveyor of Exotic Grilled Sausages. I might call them a casual, order-at-the-counter, hot dog restaurant. Here is a link to their website: Wurstküche
