This energetic group of Village Hikers meets on the second Friday of each month. Hikes are generally four to five miles in length (sometimes longer) and include trail hiking as well as urban hikes.
Recent hikes include trails in Cherry Canyon, Griffith Park, Placerita Canyon, Marshall Canyon, Mt. Washington and Altadena.
Friday, October 10, we’re hiking El Prieto Canyon Trail in Altadena. This is a moderately challenging, out-and-back hike of approximately four miles. The first half-mile is flat, as we walk along the Gabrielino Trail, then we branch off to the right and head into El Prieto Canyon. We’ll be walking uphill for about 1 ½ miles with a refreshment break at the half way point, before we turn back.
Much of the hike is shaded and lush with vegetation. Once we’re in the canyon, the trail becomes rocky, uneven and narrow. Wear hiking shoes and bring your hiking poles. We’ll stop at two picnic tables for the break, so bring water and a snack.
Directions to the trailhead: From the 210 Freeway, take Windsor Ave exit and head north on Windsor to the intersection at Ventura Street. Make a left onto Explorer Road and follow it down the east side of the arroyo. Stay on Explorer and head north to the large, unpaved parking area near the JPL bridge and the trailhead. You’ll know you’re there because you can’t drive any further north.
Please reach out to Jane Hufnagel with any questions.
