Spend the day in the beach town of Ventura.  We will meet at Los Angeles Union Station and take the 9:13 AM Amtrak Surfliner train, arriving in Ventura 2 hours later.  We will take the 5:28 train back to Los Angeles, arriving at 7:40 PM.  Round trip tickets for seniors are $48.

As described by Urban Hiker author Bob Inman, Ventura has a sensational town center featuring a grid of streets full of great buildings, including some from the early 19^th century.  There are parks and squares, impressive trees, iconic buildings, and a casual vibe. 

You may choose to explore this historic town or you may want to head for the beach. The Museum of Ventura County (free admission) and the Mission Basilica San Buenaventura ($4-5 self guided tours) are less than half a mile walk from the station. Or, the Ventura Pier and harbor area is about half a mile toward the sea. Either way, it will be an adventure and a great way to say goodbye to summer!

Plan to purchase your own lunch. There are several options within a mile walk of the station. $48 for seniors for roundtrip fare on the Amtrak Surfliner plus the cost of lunch/sightseeing activities.
